The idea of a lightweight and cordless headset appealed to me--cords tend to snag on the mountain pile of papers that is my desk. When I finished sawing through the Fort Knox style clam shell packaging I was taken aback by the diminutive size of the dongle--which is roughly the same size as a standard USB thumb drive--and headset which features a thin behind-the-head band. In fact, the dongle is so small that losing it is a real possibility; having a way to attach it to the headset when not in use would have been nice.
Installation was a dream. On my Windows XP, Vista, and 7 computers all I needed to do was plug in the dongle. That's it. I'm still awed by Logitech's ability to make plug-n-play more than a marketing ploy. But...
The first use was like a bucket of cold water to the face. Lightweight does not equal comfortable. There was no way my ears could survive more than an hour or two of use. The mesh material covering the speakers is a skin irritant, causing my ears to itch. Also, the portion of the headset which rests above the ears to hold it in place presses against the back of my ears and causes pain after prolonged use. Plus, after an hour, my ears felt as though they were overheating.
Another drawback to this headset is the lack of a speaker mute button. It is instead replaced by a play/pause button which only functions with a few specific applications. It was something I didn't think I'd miss...until I landed on a website with gawdawful music playing in the background and no way to turn it off. Instinctively I reached to the large center button (the location on another Logitech headset) and was dismayed when the noise didn't abate.
I also noticed that a button to manually select the audio settings (i.e. movie, music, chat) was absent. I figured the change would happen automatically but I noticed no discernible change in audio quality when I switched between the three (i.e. Skype to iTunes to WinDVD, etc.). That said, the sound quality isn't up to an audiophile's standards, but it's not abysmal either.
The range, through concrete walls, was about 30 feet, which for me is more than enough. It allowed me to multitask across my office, and even in my kitchen, while still being party to a conversation on internet chat. Had the headset been more comfortable I'd see no reason to take it off at all while working on the computer. Alas, that isn't the case. And unfortunately simply switching off the headset does not revert sound back to the computer's speakers, the dongle itself must be removed.
The headset lasted about 7 hours of actual use (with a few days downtime between uses) on a full charge and it only takes a few hours to recharge. It can even charge with a USB wall charger--I've used it with the one that came with my iPhone without problems. But the charging and power lights are anything but intuitive. After reading the user's manual, I'm still confused by the blinking/coloring while in use/charging.
While this has some great features--size, ease of use, range--it has a few major drawbacks--uncomfortable for prolonged use, not switching to computer's speakers when headset is powered off, a small dongle with no way to secure it to headset. So my final verdict? It's adequate, but does not go above or beyond the call of duty and may be counterproductive for some.
I work at home and my desk sits squarely between the family room and the kitchen. That's fine when the kids are at school, but when everyone is home it can be distracting at times.
This headset is wonderful. It was plug and play, although I did need to select it as an audio output preference in my system preference - I'm on a Mac. And I love that you can control what you're listening to with the buttons right on the headset. If I need to pause for a minute I just press the button and then press it again to resume.
I've used it to listen to lectures and music while I'm cooking. It even works in my garden as long as I'm not too far from my computer, then it starts to break up a bit. I'd say I have a 30-40 foot range. It's even been great at my desk to listen to soothing music if the teenagers are being loud. :-)
All around, a great headset and highly recommended!
